Chef Kevin’s Spicy BBQ Rub

About recipe

This rub has all the familiar barbecue notes of smoke, salt, sweet, and spice. We recommend using on grilled meats, fish, and vegetables.

For renal diets, Chef Kevin uses this spice mix instead of a tomato-based BBQ sauce, allowing our clients to enjoy traditional BBQ flavor without the added potassium from tomatoes.

Among other benefits, cooking with spices is a great way to reduce sodium in your diet and decrease your risk of heart disease. Additionally, cayenne pepper has been shown to reduce appetite and increase fat burning.

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup paprika
  • 1/2 Tbsp. coarse black pepper

  • 1/2 Tbsp. chili powder
  • 1/2 Tbsp. garlic powder

  • 1/2 tsp. cumin

Preparation

  1. Mix ingredients together in a bowl.
  2. Store in an air-tight container or keep in the freezer in a sealed plastic bag.
