Make use of your apples from the orchard with this hearty, whole wheat apple bread. The whole wheat flour and apples provide fiber, and the applesauce lends sweetness and moisture without added butter or oil. We recommend popping a slice in the toaster for a warm, comforting breakfast or snack.

Ingredients (serves 1)

Dry

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup walnuts, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon

Wet

  • 2 cups apples, grated
  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Mix dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Add wet ingredients to dry, mix well.
  4. Spread evenly in a greased loaf pan (9X5 is recommended).
  5. Sprinkle cinnamon on top, if desired.
  6. Bake for 30-40 minutes.
