Chef Andy Husbands’ Bare-Bones BBQ Sauce

This down-and-dirty barbecue sauce by Chef Andy Husbands is as easy as reaching for a jarred one from the supermarket. Chances are you already have all the ingredients in your pantry!

Ingredients (serves 1)

  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup packed light brown sugar
  • ½ cup apple cider vinegar
  • ¼ cup water
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 ½ tablespoons yellow mustard
  • ½ tablespoon garlic powder
  • ½ tablespoon ground cumin
  • ½ tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper
  • ½ tablespoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup ketchup

Preparation

  1. Combine all the ingredients except the ketchup in a medium saucepan over medium-high
    heat, whisking to blend.
  2. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes, stirring
    occasionally.
  3. Whisk in the ketchup and continue to simmer for 5 minutes more.
  4. Remove from the heat.
  5. Cool to room temperature and refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 1 month.
