Food Policy and Advocacy Internship

About Community Servings Community Servings is a not-for-profit food and nutrition program providing services throughout Massachusetts to individuals and families living with critical and chronic illnesses. We give our clients, their dependent families, and caregivers appealing, nutritious meals, and send the message to those in greatest need that someone cares. Our goals are to help our clients maintain their health and dignity and preserve the integrity of their families through free, culturally appropriate, home-delivered meals, nutrition education, and other community programs.

Internship Description
The Policy and Advocacy intern will gain insight and experience into the development and execution of an organizational advocacy agenda. Collaborating with seasoned professionals, board members, volunteers and consultants, s/he will be part of a team that lays the groundwork for Community Servings emerging policy and advocacy work. This position is an ideal opportunity for an individual wanting to gain solid professional skills and experience for a career in politics, public policy, nonprofit management or communications.

Position Responsibilites

- Help identify, contact, and build relationships with strategically targeted constituencies, including but not limited to: state legislators and their staff; staff at non-profits and coalitions; and influential local community members and other stakeholders.

- Assist with strategizing best practices for outreach

- Create and maintain a detailed, advocacy database that tracks the evolution of key stakeholder relationships

- Work with Community Servings staff to develop organizational best practices for managing and communicating with the Advocacy Working Group

- Help Advocacy Working Group refine and adjust its agenda by participating in regularly scheduled phone calls and meetings

- Work with Communications department to update necessary and relevant advocacy-related content on organizational website and social media

- Background in advocacy or public policy

Position Requirements

- Current or recent undergraduate or graduate student.

- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, etc.

- Meticulous attention to detail.

- Excellent interpersonal, writing and communications skills.

- Professionalism and punctuality.

- Availability to work occasional weekends and evenings.

- Ability to work independently within the framework of a project.

- Must be able to average a minimum of 16 hours each week from June 4 to August 31, 2012.
